South America

Early cultures in South America began domesticating Llamas, Alpacas, Guanacos and Vicunas around 3500 B.C. These animals were used for meat and wool. The Llama was also used for transportation of goods.

Remains from ancient Incan civilization indicate that the Alpaca played a central role in their culture. They believed Alpacas were a gift from God. Clothing for high government officials and royalty were made form Alpaca fleece.

The Alpaca went from a highly protected animal to almost an endangered species in the mid 1500's. The small countries of Chili, Bolivia and Peru were conquered by the Spanish. Alpacas were slaughtered in large numbers and were on the brink of becoming extinct. As a matter of preservation the Alpaca population moved to the high regions of the Andes Mountains.

In the 1910's the Peruvian fiber industry took hold in South America. Alpaca Fleece mills were opened all over the country. Exportation of fleece and finished products were once again a highly profitable export.

The Michell Company played a commanding role in this rejuvination of the Alpaca Industry. This company helped to put together Perus' first Alpaca Textile Mill. Today there are many smaller shops providing fiber and finished products around the world.

Alpacas today are found naturally in Chile, Bolivia, and Peru. They are also found in many countries around the world thanks to open exportation of these animals in the late 1900's. Peru was the last to open its border for exportation and maintains strict control today.

Alpacas continue to be found in the wild in the higher elevations of the Andes Mountain range in addition to the domesticated Alpacas of the plains. Lake Titicaca which is bordered by Chile, Bolivia, and Peru has the largest population of Alpacas.
