Roosters
A rooster is a male chicken. The female is called a hen. Immature male chickens less than one year old are called cockerels. Roosting is the action of perching to sleep at night. This is done by both sexes of chickens. A rooster will guard the general area where his hens are nesting. He will attack other roosters that enter his territory. During daylight hours he will perch or sit about 4 to 5 feet off the ground to view his flock. He will sound a distinctive alarm call if predators are nearby. A rooster will start crowing at the break of dawn before 4 months of age. He is often seen sitting on a fence post or some other object. He crows to proclaim his territory. However, a rooster also will crow any time of the day. Some roosters will crow constantly while others only crow a few times a day. The amount he crows is partly breed and partly his individual personality. A rooster can also cluck similar to a hen. They may make a patterned series of clucks to attract hens to a source of food. This is the same as a mother hen does for her chicks. Persons born within certain date ranges are said to have been born in the year of the Rooster. It is further divided into Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, or Fire. This designation is usually given to persons born in January or February for 2 consecutive years followed by an 11 year break.
