Horses
Humans first began to domesticate horses around 4000 BCE. By 2000 BCE horses were used around the entire Eurasian continent. Most horses today are domesticated. However, there still remain some herds of wild horses around the world. Horses have a well developed sense of balance and a strong fight or flight instinct. Their anatomy allows them to make use of great speed to escape predators. Horses are able to sleep both standing up and lying down. A young horse, called a foal, can stand and run shortly after birth. Full development is achieved around age 5. Horses typically live between 25 and 30 years. There are over 300 breeds of horses in the world today. They fall in 3 loose categories. Hot bloods are spirited with speed and endurance. Cold bloods are suitable for slow, heavy work. Warm bloods are a combination used for specific riding purposes. Horses are truly regal creatures regardless of their breed or type. Beauty, power, speed, honor, nobility and independence are just a few qualities used when describing these terrific animals.
