Elephants
The origins of the lucky elephant can be found in the Hindu religion of India. The god “Ganesha”, the elephant-headed son of Siva and Parvati, is worshipped as a luck-god. The American lucky elephant craze of the early to mid 20th century did not use the elephant-headed Ganesha. Instead, it focused on the “white elephants" of Thailand. These pale-skinned elephants could only be owned by members of the royal family. White elephants were expensive to maintain claims were made that the King of Thailand was straining his treasury to keep his white elephants fed. American fascination with the lucky elephant-god of India and the white elephants of Thailand combined to form the lucky elephant knick-knack. Only those elephant figurines with their trunks upraised were lucky. The rest were "just elephants." This section presents to you some special elephant figurines/collectibles. The elephant entered popular culture folk-magic during the late 19th century. It reached a peak in the 1930s when lucky elephant charms and knick-knacks were all the rage in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
