Dolphins
They have some mammal characteristics which include hair, lungs, live birth and the nursing of calves. Dolphins are born with a small amount of hair on their beak, but when in adulthood only the follicles remain. Dolphins have terrific vision both in and out of the water. In water their eyes are protected from the sea water by mucus secreted from glands at the outer corner of the eye. Their ears are small and hard to detect. They are located just behind the eyes and have no flaps or lobes. The dolphin's swimming power comes from its "caudal fluke". It moves up and down instead of side-to-side like fish. The dorsal fin provides stabilization and may also regulate body heat. Dolphins typically cruise at a speed of 5 to 7 miles per hour. They can easily reach speeds of 30 miles per hour. Baby Dolphins, or calves, feed on mothers's milk the first few weeks of their lives. They begin eating fish at 3 to 4 months and are totally weaned at 12 to 18 months. Dolphin calves are generally 2 1/2 to 3 feet long when born and weigh 25 to 40 pounds. Males are generally larger. Adults reach a size of 7 to 10 feet and can weigh 300 to 500 pounds. Dolphins feed on all kinds of fish and crustaceans. Adults eat 13 to 14 pounds of fish a day. They can eat up to 20 pounds or more in colder winter waters. In the wild dolphins live 25 to 30 years. They have been known to live up to 40 years in captivity. Female dolphins give birth every 2 to 3 years. They can have up to 8 babies in their lifetime. Their calves can arrive anytime of the year, but typicaly are born in the spring or summer. Dolphins don't sleep like we do. They take cat naps on the surface of the water. In the day time these naps last 2 to 3 minutes. At night they might last 7 to 8 minutes.
