Alpaca Yarn
Alpaca Yarn is the greatest part of our Alpaca Fleece Business. Every day I am either spinning yarn or working with the yarn I have made to make something truly beautiful. It is easy when you are working with Alpaca fleece.
The initial joy working with Alpacas is choosing and raising these special animals. Next comes shearing and carding their fiber into roving. Best of all, after all that hard work, I get to use my imagination and create something spectacular.
When I first started experimenting with our Alpaca fleece I tried
spinning
with a drop spindle. I also tried spinning using a Navajo spindle. I found that I could make nice yarn but it was very slow.
I really fell in love with spinning when I purchased my first portable wheel. I take it wherever I go to relax and spin to my hearts content.
There is nothing like home spun all natural yarn to work with. If you are looking to buy Alpaca Yarn be wary of synthetic duplicates. They just aren't the same. You can immediately tell a skein of hand spun yarn compared to commercial skein. They just look and feel different. If the yarn is too cheap it is probably partly or mostly synthetic.
My craft does not stop at a skein of single ply yarn. I love to ply different colors together for a very special look. It is also fun to add beads or ribbon to the yarn. You can be as creative as you want with your
specialty yarn.
Single ply yarn is fantastic for crocheting lace. Most of my yarn is all natural. But you can
dye
your yarn to create color for that special piece.
Weaving
is a great activity for that long, cool afternoon. I love to use single ply yarn on my loom to make shawls.
A double ply yarn can be added to the woven product for a rich texture. And if you want to really wow someone try adding some card weaving while working on your loom !
And don't forget, there is nothing better than curling up on a cold winter day with some yarn and a pair of knitting needles or a crochet hook. Everyone loves hand
knit or crochet
blankets, hats, scarves, sweaters and more.
