Alpaca Products

Alpaca products are frequently referred to as being as soft as cashmere. It is only untl you wear this special fabric that you will truly understand.

Alpaca is hypoallergenic. When people say they are allergic to wool they are mostly allergic to the Lanolin that is commonly found in sheeps wool. Alpaca contains no Lanolin.

Alpaca does not "itch". Sheeps wool contains coarse fibers called gaurd hairs. It is these gaurd hairs that cause a person to itch. Alpaca contains no gaurd hairs.

Alpaca fibers contain microscopic air pockets that make the fleecce have a unique thermal capacity. The result is a lightweight but warm fabric.

Alpaca is easy to take care of. It is very resilient and strong. Products made from Alpaca fleece require special care and cleaning. They can generally be hand washed or machine washed on a gentle cycle. Lay flat to dry or use very low heat to avoid shrinkage.

Make no mistake, pure Alpaca is not cheap. Fleece is sold by the ounce. Because of its superior quality it is ranked in the same category as cashmere. In fact, many people will tell you that Alpaca "feels as soft as cashmere".

Caution, many companies mix synthetic material with Alpaca and sell it as Alpaca. Check with the manufacturer or seller to find out how much of the item is actually Alpaca. If the Alpaca product you are purchasing is inexpensive it is probably a synthetic blend with little Alpaca fiber.

A good, honest retailer can be a good source for your Alpaca items. However, the best way to ensure you are purchasing pure Alpaca is from a hand made source. Hand spun and hand made products will cost you more, but they are pure Alpaca and not synthetic.

Hand spun and hand made products from Alpaca fleece were not made in a mill or discount warehouse. There is a lot of time and pride taken in making pure Alpaca hand made pieces. It is well worth your money.

Whichever you choose, hand made vs mill production, you will not be disappointed when you choose Alpaca. There is nothing else like it. It is no wonder why Alpaca items have been prized throughout history as "the fiber of the gods".
